Recreational fishing development plan

Recreational fishing is an important part of the Northern Territory (NT) lifestyle and a major contributor to the economy.

To ensure the NT maintains and enhances the quality of its recreational fishing, the NT Government has a recreational fishing development plan (RFDP) in place.

It identifies issues facing recreational fishing, and strategies and actions in response to them.

A new RFDP is currently being developed and is open to public consultation.

Read the previous 2012-2022 RFDP PDF (538.9 KB).

Who’s involved

The new RFDP is being developed by the Fisheries Division in the Department of Industry, Tourism and Trade, in collaboration with:

  • Amateur Fishermen's Association of the Northern Territory (AFANT)
  • NT Recreational Fishing Advisory Committee.

From June to July 2022 consultation workshops were held with community and industry stakeholders.

What’s next

A draft of the new plan will be released for public comment through the Have Your Say website in late 2022.
