Hello everyone!

Welcome to the August 2022 edition.

For the Territory and much of Australia, biosecurity has come sharply into focus. Off the back of rolling plant and pest incursions over recent decades, then COVID 19, the surprise arrival of Japanese Encephalitis, the re-emergence of banana freckle and now the dark shadow of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) and lumpy skin disease in our region, we have plenty to think about!  A recent biosecurity conference on the Gold Coast announced the ‘decade of biosecurity’. Well it’s been on for a bit longer than that, but if that tag line can increase attention and investment into the most critical needs of our industries and the people and communities of our regions, then let’s run with it.  I think we all know, that we  have a lot more work to do, to be prepared.

The arrival in Darwin of a returning traveller from Bali with an undeclared McDonald’s burger and a $2,600 fine has received world-wide attention, with much debate about appropriate penalties. Infected meat products ending up as pig food has always been seen as the high risk area for Australia and repeatedly sampling of smuggled and imported products into Australia have yielded FMD, African swine fever and other viral traces. The risks remain real and only last week results of testing on food products from supermarkets, the post and inbound travellers yielded viral traces. The left over hamburger or salami, the expired food from a supermarket or restaurant fed out to some backyard pigs are a risk of spreading the disease. Once infested pigs amplify viruses (aerosols from breath into the air) including FMD up to 3,000 times more effectively than cattle, sheep and goats and this can be carried many kilometres on the wind. If there is one message today - DO NOT FEED SWILL (animal products) to pigs! It is also illegal in Australia.

It is a great time to revisit farm biosecurity plans and a range of resources, information sessions and materials essential to underpinning the integrity of our products, production systems and markets.
