Consultation: Emergency animal diseases livestock valuation framework

Contributions to this consultation are closed for evaluation and review.

Background

In the past 18 months, the threat of emergency animal diseases on the Northern Territory’s (NT) livestock industries has been heightened with the detection of foot-and-mouth disease and lumpy skin disease in Indonesia.

In the event that an emergency disease declaration is made in the Territory under the Livestock Act 2008, the response may include the destruction of livestock as a means to either eradicate or control the spread of disease.

Emergency animal diseases livestock valuation framework

As part of the NT Government’s emergency animal disease response preparations, the Department of Industry, Tourism and Trade has appointed Bush AgriBusiness to develop an independent livestock valuation framework and tool.

The valuation framework and tool will be used to determine the initial amount of compensation payable for destroyed livestock, prior to initiating the national cost sharing arrangements under the emergency animal disease response agreement. Read the agreement on the Animal Health Australia website.

It is important that industry and stakeholders have their say on how this will be worked out.

A discussion paper was prepared which:

  • identifies the key issues considered when preparing the draft framework and tool
  • poses some focussing questions.
