Meet Dr. Farida Abubakari, the new pastoral extension officer on our Alice Springs Livestock team. In terms of science, Farida has a broad background. She has a Masters degree in soil science in addition to an honours science degree in agriculture. She recently received a PhD in mined land rehabilitation from the University of Queensland, and has good knowledge of agricultural systems, plant science and environmental processes.

Farida grew up in the northern part of Ghana, which has a similar warm climate and vegetation to the Alice Springs region but a different topography. She has previous extension work experience educating farmers on best farming practices in Ghana, where livestock production is a major business, with several regions well-known for rearing various species, such as poultry and pigs in the southern region; cattle in the northern savannah region; and sheep and goats in all regions.

Farida’s passion for extension work comes from the fact that she enjoys interacting with producers and sharing new ideas to help them increase production. She is excited to work with the Central Australian pastoral industry to help them find answers to urgent issues, and looks forward to engaging with businesses, partners, and stakeholders across the Territory.
