Attendees at reducing calf loss on the Downs

In October, staff from the Department of Industry, Tourism and Trade’s (DITT) Agriculture Division travelled to Queensland to share recent research and practical prevention strategies to reduce calf wastage.

Hosted by the Queensland Department of Agriculture and Fisheries, the Beef Field Day at Redland Park near McKinlay in north west Queensland, was attended by around 25 producers and primarily addressed the topic of calf loss, with a number of exceptional speakers addressing the variety of factors contributing to this industry-wide issue.

DITT Livestock Scientist Dr Kieren McCosker presented heat lessons from the Barkly Tablelands as part of the Reducing Calf Loss to Exposure project, while DITT Livestock Scientist Tim Schatz presented findings from the Calf Watch project.

Both presentations garnered much interest and engagement from producers eager to hear the latest information and adopt new practices, in an effort to reduce the instance of calf loss on their properties.
