Have your say on the Livestock Valuation Framework

Published

The Territory Government has invested heavily in biosecurity to make sure we continue to support and protect our industries if an Emergency Animal Disease (EAD) was to be detected here.

Being prepared has never been more important - the Territory’s livestock industry is vital to the Territory economy returning over $1 billion annually in value.

In the past 18 months, the threat of EAD on the Territory’s livestock industries has been heighten with the detection of foot and mouth disease and lumpy skin disease in Indonesia.

In the event that an EAD declaration is made in the Territory under the Livestock Act 2008 , the response may include the destruction of livestock a means to either eradicate or control the spread of disease.

As part of the Territory Government’s EAD response, the Department of Industry, Tourism and Trade has engaged consultant, Bush Agribusiness, to develop an independent livestock valuation framework and tool in consultation with industry stakeholders.

The valuation framework and tool will be used to determine the initial amount of compensation payable for destroyed livestock, prior to initiating the national cost sharing arrangements under the Emergency Animal Disease Response Agreement.

It is absolutely imperative that the Territory Government has a transparent livestock valuation methodology and tool in place should an EAD ever occur in the Territory.

It is important that livestock industry stakeholders have their say in the development of the valuation framework and tool. Stakeholders and are encouraged to read the discussion paper on the Have Your Say website and to provide feedback.

The closing date for feedback is 4pm, Thursday 30 November 2023.
