The Northern Territory Government’s Department of Industry, Tourism and Trade (DITT) is hosting an industrial hemp field day at Katherine Research Station (KRS) on Monday 19 June 2023, between 12pm to 2.30pm.

Co-funded by AgriFutures Australia, Industrial hemp variety trials (IHVT) includes government agencies of the Northern Territory, Western Australia, South Australia, Tasmania, Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland. It is an Australia-wide program trialling low-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) hemp varieties that aims to provide Australian industrial hemp growers with independent information about the performance of new industrial hemp varieties.

KRS is the Northern Territory’s (NT’s) site selected for IHVT program that started growing industrial hemp from April 2022. The field day at KRS will showcase the suitability of selected hemp varieties to grow in Katherine region and the NT at large, and the best sowing time in order to give potential growers an excellent chance to successfully establish a hemp industry in the NT.

The industry has a high growth potential with diverse range of products coming from hemp including textiles, stockfeed, pet bedding, human food (seed) and building materials.

If you are interested in knowing more about this emerging industry, we invite you to come along to the field day.
