New swim instructors take the plunge

The Northern Territory is doing something about the most unlikely of skills shortages by training swimming teachers and pool lifeguards – free of charge.

Territory Government support is enabling Royal Life Saving NT, in partnership with AUSTSWIM, to offer free training to 35 Territorians – 15 in Darwin, 10 in Alice Springs, 5 in Tennant Creek and 5 in Nhulunbuy.

The aim of the Take the Plunge – Teach a Skill for Life initiative is not just to keep swimmers safe, but also to create pathways to fulfilling careers in the aquatic industry, whether full-time, part-time or casual.

The demand for swimming teachers and lifeguards is predicted to continue growing.

“There are lots of opportunities to grow your career and make a meaningful impact in your community,” says Royal Life Saving Society NT training manager Rebecca Gawne.

“Working in the aquatic industry helps to make a positive impact on other people’s lives. And it’s a job that allows you to work all over Australia and the world.

“The reaction to the Take the Plunge program is extraordinary with an overwhelming number of applicants. Some training locations now have a growing waitlist.”

She says public swimming pools and other aquatic facilities play a crucial role in the community, promoting social interaction and wellbeing.

Training will start in mid-August and be completed by December.

The Pre-Employment Program provides funding for training to combat a skill shortage and helps people gain practical skills to help them get a job, apprenticeship or traineeship.

Investing in training for Territorians benefits business and ensures employers have access to a properly skilled workforce.
