Know your animal welfare responsibilities

Published

From 1 November 2022, changes to the Animal Protection Act and Regulations will strengthen animal welfare protection measures and improve animal welfare outcomes in the Northern Territory.

Changes have been made including:

  • stronger penalties for inadequate care
  • tighter regulations for animal welfare and handling
  • new requirements for transporting dogs safely on the back of your ute on a public road
  • animal welfare officers have increased powers.

The new laws build upon the existing animal welfare regulatory framework in the Territory. The regulations clearly define the rights, roles and responsibilities for government, industry and the community.

If you are concerned about an animal's welfare or suspect or witness cruelty, phone the department’s Animal Welfare Branch on 1300 720 386. All calls received are confidential and you can stay anonymous. You can also email animalwelfare@nt.gov.au
