New acreage release for gas exploration announced

Published

Applications and submissions are now invited for an exploration permit for two areas in the southern Georgina Basin following the Northern Territory Government’s announcement on 16 June 2021.

The Minister for Mining and Industry will consider the applications and submissions and determine what areas, if any, will be made available for the granting of an exploration permit application.

The 30,780 square kilometres or 392 full and part blocks of the Georgina Basin are on the border of the Northern Territory and Queensland. The area covers some of the most prospective areas known for organic-rich shales and widespread documented oil and gas.

By making the new acreage release available for onshore petroleum exploration, the Territory Government is supporting investment opportunities in the resources sector. The resources sector, both in exploration and production, creates jobs, helps build our regions, grows wealth for Territorians, and contributes to improving essential infrastructure such as transport corridors.

Applications and submissions for the grant of a petroleum exploration permit opened on 16 June 2021 and close on 16 November 2021.
