20th anniversary AGES wraps up

Presentations and abstracts from the 2019 Annual Geoscience and Exploration Seminar (AGES) are available now on the Resourcing the Territory website.

More than 250 delegates filled the Alice Springs Convention Centre on 19 and 20 March for the 20th AGES, making it the most well-attended since 2012.

The delegates heard the latest results from Northern Territory Geological Survey (NTGS) programs under the Resourcing the Territory initiative, as well as industry and researcher presentations.

Executive Director NTGS Ian Scrimgeour opened the conference with an overview of mineral and petroleum exploration and production across the Territory in 2018, and the positive news that the exploration sector in the Territory is continuing to recover from recent downturn.

There has been strong growth in exploration for gold, copper, zinc and lithium, with mineral exploration expenditure reaching $123.2 million in 2018 – a 35% increase on the previous year.

Onshore gas exploration is also expected to expand over the coming years with new certainty in the sector as recommendations from the Scientific Inquiry into Hydraulic Fracturing are implemented.

Industry presentations included updates on projects from Todd River Resources, Kirkland Lake Gold, Core Lithium, Northern Cobalt, Independence Group NL, Prodigy Gold, Mossman Oil and Gas, Emmerson Resources and Vimy Resources.

Geoscience Australia, CSIRO, and the University of Adelaide also presented studies and insights from ongoing collaborative projects with NTGS.

AGES is a key element of the government’s efforts to attract and support resources exploration by providing state of the art geoscience information and data.

AGES was held in conjunction with the Mining Services Expo, which saw 40 service and supply companies, and government and educational organisations promote their skills and ability to service the resources sector in the Territory.
