Celebrating training’s finest
The best and brightest of Territory’s trainers, trainees and employers have been recognised at the 2018 Northern Territory (NT) Training Awards.
Employers recognised for their outstanding commitment to nurturing apprentices and trainees included Hot Tamale Mexican Cantina on Darwin’s waterfront in the small business category, and Territory-wide ICT provider NEC in the medium business category.
Nathan Powell, a former police officer who began a mature age electro-technology apprenticeship, took out the coveted Austin Asche Apprentice of the Year title.
This year a new category was introduced to recognise the contribution of international students to the Northern Territory’s vocational education and training sector.
In 2017, over 2,500 international students enrolled to study in the Northern Territory with 20% of international students enrolled in a VET qualification.
The inaugural International Vocational Student of the Year Award was presented to Manfred Mletsin.
Manfred, who is originally from Estonia recently completed a Diploma of Leadership and Management which has taught new skills and better practices in his role as a supervisor in the Darwin hospitality sector.
The Northern Territory Government recognises the importance of vocational education and training (VET) and invests more than $70 million annually to train and support Territorians.
As of June 2018, there were 3,291 apprentices and trainees across the Territory.
There were 39 finalists in 12 categories at this year’s NT Training Awards, from fields such as electro-technology, early childhood, business, fitness, agriculture, conservation and construction.
A number of winners will now go on to represent the NT at the Australia Training Awards in Sydney on 15 November.
