Rum Jungle rehabilitation plan

The proposed rehabilitation plan, outlined in detail within the draft environmental impact statement (EIS), aims to target the remediation of existing acid and metalliferous drainage contamination sources and the interruption of other contaminant source-pathway-receptor linkages.

It also aims to address, as far as achievable, the physical aspects of the site that require remediation - namely the flow path of the East Branch of the Finniss River and the quality of fluvial landscapes.

While the primary objective of this project is to restore the environmental condition onsite and downstream of the mine, the secondary objective is to create stable landforms to support future land use.

Annual compliance report

Under the Rum Jungle funding agreement, the Rum Jungle rehabilitation project must comply with 2 sets of approvals:

  • Northern Territory Environmental Approval (EP2023/022)
  • Australian Government Environmental Approval (2016/7730)

Both approvals require annual compliance reporting.

As there are overlaps between the approvals, a single and consolidated annual compliance report has been produced by the independent auditors.

This report is the first to be completed, read the findings below:

  • the 2023 compliance report found that DITT satisfies the approvals
  • a number of observations were made and some corrective actions were recommended
  • the auditors will check compliance against the recommendations made in the 2024 report.
